TROUBLES PUT IN TO PERSPECTIVE

Today in clinic we had a big group of refugees from Burma come in. It was so emotionally overwhelming. You can not begin to even imagine the things these people have been through. I figured I'd try to shine a tiny light on their troubles as it seems to put our daily "troubles" into perspective. A short little background on these survivors. They have lived in a society where the women are raped by their corrupt governement officals since the first day they can remember. I got an estimate of age 4 from their translator. Many of the women were not a day older than 21 with 3 kids. Many of which were pregnancies from being raped. For the past 6 months they have lived in a refugee camp. To get there they have gone from doctor to doctor getting poked at, stared at, and fussed with. They finally made it to Connecticut where they get thrown into our clinic. I can't imagine how terrifying it must have been for them today to walk in. I don't think one of them had ever been to a dentist in their lives. I can't imagine how they must have felt to sit in a chair, laid back, with one of us coming at them with sharp instruments. Not to mention strangers taking away their kids so that their hygienist could get the work done. Now I sit here speechless trying to come to a reality of today's events. Just when you think your life is hard think again. The world presents with so many harsh realities. Many of us can't even begin to comprehend their existence.

Nothing can sum up my school experience better than the title of this blog. You never know what your capable of until you are pushed beyond your comfort level. I can safely say that if I knew what dental hygiene school entailed I would have hesitated at choosing it for my life long career. Sometimes it is better to not know and dive in head first. This method has proven effective. I have learned so much about myself in the past year. And during that time have truly come to love what it is that I do. That is not to say that every day doesn't suck and stress me out. But I can see the light at the end of the tunnel. I just hope when I get there this idea of it paying off and being worth it isn't a big joke. However I don't think education is ever a waste of time. So either way I come out ahead. I definitely couldn't survive without Col and all his help and support. 5 weeks and I get to see my family so that's awesome!! Anyways... I'll post some pictures of school. ENJOY!

HALLOWEEN FIELD TRIP

How do you celebrate Halloween as a dental hygiene student? You go visit Alfred C. Fones grave of course. He is the founder of dental hygiene! I am lucky enough to go to his school which is the 1st dental hygiene school ever in the world. So we got to have a little field trip to go see where he is buried. In the same cemetery we got to visit a few more "famous" people. Irene Newman is famous to dental hygienists. She was the 1st one ever. We also go to see Barnum as in Barnum and Bailey circus and Tom Thumbs grave. The cemetery is beautiful and it was a nice little break away from the classroom.

Salem, Mass.

Well this post is a little late, but since we are just getting this thing stared lets get up to speed. Kelc and I took a little weekend trip to Salem a couple weekends ago to check out the witches. Trouble is we couldn't tell who the real witches were and who were just tourists. Never the less we had a great time at the museum, and taking a night time walking tour of the old and still haunted buildings around the town...

We went shopping...

Hung out with celebrities...

And joined a coven.

All in all a good time.
